Halloween

For halloween this year we had a cowgirl, a blue flasher butterfly and a queen bee! So much fun to put together little girlie costumes, we all enjoyed choosing the costumes and picking out the colors. The first thing we did was trick or treat at grandpa and grammies house, and then it was on to the outlets. The evening was finished by visiting the church's carnival. I was super wiped out by the days end- I think next year we will pare it down a bit!

Starting Again...

Over the past year I have been remiss- our family blog is severely lacking. I am sorry to not have chronicled our family's wanderings for 2011 and hope to begin again soon! The year has been so tremendous; a lot of change,a lot of learning, a lot of growth, a lot of healing for us. But with all of these things comes the blessed assurance of our Lord's hand in our life; His faithful presence and providence.

Isaac began a business- DonVintage- started from the ground up and sold his favorite truck to get started. I am so proud of his determination- teaching himself the business and skills necessary to not only get the job done, but to do it excellently. He continues to improve as he moves forward. In addition to growing a business and all that entails, he got a part time job at the outlets to provide some steady income for the family. Even through all of this the family has been his priority- we know we are so loved! And speaking of our family, we added one to our number by welcoming little Liviya Pearl to the world in September. How can I truly say just how much I love my husband and our little family? (yes, a cheesy rhetorical question.)

Of course we are not "an island." One of the many ways God has blessed us is through family and friends. We are so incredibly grateful for those who have been on their knees for us, praying for this time of transition, for peace and guidance as we withdrew to a quiet season in our life. We began this year with such wounded souls, desperate for the healing that can only come from His Word; spoken sometimes through family, sometimes in reading, sometimes from old friends that we love as our own, and sometimes in new friendships that were unexpected but such a gift. I only hope that with all of this "refilling" of our cups, we can spill over and give God the glory by blessing others, and still we wait to see how God wants to use us in the future. Yes, Lord, get me ready!!

I am excited about the coming year. So many opportunities just waiting to be discovered. So many moments with precious family, so many lost that need to be found. And yet we don't know the number of our days. Let's make the most of every opportunity, starting always with prayer and a deep gratefulness for the work of the cross.

These pics were taken at the end of service, needless to say they had sat still long enough! The girls were thrilled to wear the beautiful dresses that Great Grandma Freeman gave them- thanks so much for thinking of us!!

We also had a great day with perfect weather (a little teaser, little did I know it would go back to cold rain for a few more months) to have an Easter egg hunt with the kids at Grandpa and Grammie's house. We spend the afternoon dyeing eggs, hiding them, hunting for them, riding the tandem bike and then eventually finding a stinky dyed egg in Paisley's pocket!

I am especially thankful that there is even a reason to celebrate Easter... and so grateful for family to share it with.

Tulip Festival time

A while back I went with the girls down to Woodburn to meet with mom and Elaine. We had a great time- celebrating mom's birthday and getting all of the kids together. The tulip festival was happening and we thought it might be fun!

Getting a group photo at the end of the trip proved to be challenging... but classic.

Jared was hamming it up- we asked all the kids to cry so that the youngest wouldn't be the only ones!

Jud and Paisley didn't think sitting in a big wooden shoe was all that fun... So don't try this at home.

I Heart the Zoo

A little while back I met my sister at the Oregon Zoo with all of the children in tow (sans one- Jared was in Sacramento, lucky duck!) I had a blast, and I think the kids did too. We had great weather and all of the animals were out enjoying it as well.

Sea otters... they were so playful kicking off of the glass and doing flips right in front of us.

Bathroom break (again,) each bathroom break took a while! 7 kids under the age of 8 =)

I thought this was funny. They look so relaxed... maybe they would like to push my stroller up the hills?

These guys did great! Jud was so animated for some of the animals. I thought Paisley would go crazy like she does over babies but she was pretty quiet the whole day.

And now we are beginning to feel the long day... Gracie has tired eyes and she fell asleep in the car almost instantly on the way home.

We ended our day at the zoo by having to walk up the looongest hill!

We saw the walruses up above sunbathing; why did I walk down below only to walk back up yet another hill? It was totally worth it, the littles had a final burst of energy here. I love to see them enjoying each other.
We all had a great day. I am so glad that we decided to go. When I checked the forecast monday night it said rain and showers- 90% chance of precipitation all day! The girls and I prayed that night for good weather, and then we found out so did Jesse! So thankful for the Lord's answer! And thanks for meeting us there Kuykendalls- We love you!

Paisley took her first few steps at 15 months. She still prefers to scoot around, but slowly and surely she is walking more and more.

The girls have a "barbie hair book." Not to excited about it being Barbie, but it is mostly just girlie hair styles. One morning they came to me and had each picked a style out that they wanted... here are pictures of our attempts! And I am happy to report that they were both thrilled with the results (even if they weren't exactly right!)

Not long ago we decided to take a family day-trip to the coast. Here are a few pic's of us exploring the new town of SeaBrooke, and what a great little place it is! It's full of beautiful construction, so much attention to detail (I loved the outdoor lighting) and had great paths and trails to enjoy. We had a great day.

The following article is one that I have read several times over the past few months. I am so thankful the the fresh perspective on "homeschooling." The author Kevin Swanson was able to put into words what I believe deep in my heart, but am unable to communicate; words of priority relating to why we chose to homeschool our daughters.

I feel so much struggle- being pulled between two worlds. The first where I keep us busy doing the appropriate academics that the government standards and general public would dictate, and one in which I focus on family, character, faith and learn as we go, choosing with utmost care the best (most purposeful) studies. If I choose the latter, does this mean I am neglecting to give my child every opportunity to learn and develop? Can I do both? It all depends on the standard by which I am holding myself to as a parent and mentor. My children will have opportunities, they will meet and exceed educational goals, but my priority has to be "faith, character and life integration."

Our learning must be purposeful. Kevin speaks of his daughter learning to read for the first time at 7 years of age. Hmm, neglectful? On the contrary. So eloquently said, his daughter was blessed by what she learned and in turn will bless others. Read the article because I don't do it justice!

Before you read this let me just say to the teachers in my family, you have set an example of true mentorship for your family and for the families that come into your life. I am so very grateful that my girls have such thoughtful and caring guidance in their lives, family whose "teaching reaches the heart."

"The Irrelevance of 'Schools"

So where do I go from here? Do I have days that are long and all I want is for the children to be busy? Of course. Do I have days (weeks) where I don't want to clean? Yep. Still working on that one. I know that in order to focus on family life I need to have myself in check, my routine, motivation and attitude towards my contribution to the family. My prayer is to abide in the Lord and please Him. Living in the spirit with this perspective will cause my choices- daily and long term- to be the best way for my family.

Christmas in Wenatchee 2010-ish

Christmas on the east side occurred a little late this season because of some family circumstances. Of course it is always fun to celebrate with family, no matter the time.

Last year Grandpa decided it would be funny to wear the owl basket and then walk towards the grandkids... the kids didn't think it was quite as funny. They were afraid. But... that was last year! This year the kids all took turns wearing Mr. Owl, and we had fun watching the show. As usual.

Wenatchee hair... happens every year to the girls.

Esther spent a large amount of time building with the red bricks that Grandma Freeman played with while her kids grew up! Thanks for sharing =).

The first gift the grandkids opened were bean bag chairs. Big Hit!!

And speaking of Christmas cards, they didn't get sent out. I don't believe it's the first time this happened, and I am sorry. Just know that even though I am not too good at correspondance, we as a family still love our friends and family very much! Hopefully we will be able to show that in other ways throughout life, while I continue the constant struggle to conquer written words.

Recently I have been... captured... by the words of Kevin Swanson and thrown into a depth of thought that makes my mind whirl. While I get a bit dizzy trying to sort out the rush of thoughts swirling around somewhere deep in my mind I appreciate so much the challenge that this "whirl" gives me. I love the opportunity to share with my Mr. F my findings and have great discussions and hopefully apply it to our living somehow.

I have just finished reading this article: The Teen Phenomena. It will take me some time to process this and the call to change that arose in my spirit tonight! and since Mr. F is away at a meeting, I just have to share this, so here is a snippet... I will be reading along with you because it deserves a second read...

(I have added some emphasis.)

"What we have today is the remnants of a civilization where the pop culture mentors the teens, and the teens mentor their peers, and the culture is hardly developed by parents or pastors mentoring in families and churches anymore. The pastors or shepherds of the culture are the pop icons, and the youth pastors run hard to keep up with the cultural standards set by the icons. Is it any surprise that 70% of young men are not grown up by 30 years of age (up from 30% in 1970), per Newsweek magazine, or that 80% of Christian children not discipled by their parents “leave the faith” after leaving home?

If we will rebuild culture, we must begin with the fifth commandment, and a willingness on the part of parents to disciple their children in the commandments of Jesus. If this happens, we will begin to see culture reconstructed on the wreckage of the 20th century. Hopefully, the next generation will be more mature than we were in their incarnations of love and honor and discipleship of the succeeding generation; but only because they stand on the shoulders of their own parents who discipled them. "

While I understand that several fingers could be pointing at me right now, lets just focus on the solution, shall we?! It seems this will require a huge paradigm shift of perspective- I guess prayer is always the best beginning...

Home, Sweet... calamine lotion.

Well, here we are our first night home (early) from Lincoln City. The calamine lotion went on immediately!

Paisley was such a trooper with the chicken pox. I was truly amazed at how well she handled all of the discomfort. I am so glad that only one other person came down with the disease, although I wish that no-one would have had to deal with it! So sorry to expose everyone, at the beach no less! Now then... do you have any pictures You would like to share with us, Uncle Steve?!

Something else was also donned immediately upon our arrival home...

Here are some pictures of our trip with family to Lincoln City in September. What a whirlwind trip, (and by whirlwind I mean it happened for us in the middle of a lot of transition and craziness.) It was wonderful to be there with everyone, even if for a short time! We ended up leaving early due to circumstances beyond our control =) (sorry, Uncle Steve!) but the beach house still provided good times and great memories! (Some we won't soon forget ha!)

This photo was a last minute addition, but I had to add it. Paisley was so excited to wear Esther's headband from her costume, she would sway her head side to side to let the feathers tickle her cheeks!

We had a blast preparing to wear our costumes! You can see the anticipation for the evening all over their faces!

Grandpa and Grammie were working at the school house so we stopped by to say hello.

At a church carnival- slightly overwhelmed by the crowds but I think they had a blast! Walking away with some candy always brings a smile =)

A Conversation

I was driving today with my children and Gracie asked me about our friends' baby. I said she was up in heaven now. Gracie then said "maybe she will come back and be with her family." I had to reply, "No, honey. She's not coming back. She's up in heaven with Jesus now. Someday (our friends) will get to see her up there." Just then the song came on K-love that sings "dance with Jesus," so I added "you know, maybe she is dancing with Jesus right now!" to which Gracie replied, "wouldn't that be fun to dance with Jesus wearing his tu-tu!"

I love that my 3 year old's image of heaven is dancing around in a tu-tu (probably pink) with Jesus. I love that I get that same image in my own home everyday with Esther and Grace- (well, almost everyday ;)- reminding me that the work I share with my husband is such a sacred calling, reminding me to count each day as a blessing and each moment a chance to turn our daughters' hearts toward the One true and living God.

Lord please keep my heart soft and my perspective eternal.

The Family Farm

What a blessing it was to be back at the farm and see family! My cousin Duaine showed us around, gave the kids tractor rides (a little boys heaven=) and Wanda prepared a meal for us to share.

Esther is playing under the tree that mom (Grandma) used to play under as a child.

Great Grandma holding Paisley... Paisley was fussy during this meal. Maybe the travelling finally caught up with her.

Judson, however, was all smiles!

On our way out to the farm for the first time, we stopped at the gravesite for Grandpa and Grandma Dickson. Mom brought rose petals for the children to place on the grave. They all were very respectful. There is also a little headstone for Mary Pearl, mom's older sister that passed away at birth.

Pikes Peak

A.MAZ.ING

Pikes Peak was so amazing, I think I appreciated it more as an adult. 14,000 feet elevation- eye level with rain clouds, and really cold! Amazing landscape and totally SCARY drive. I am glad that Ike got to finally drive the road he's been watching crazies race up... and I'm glad Ike didn't drive like a rally racer!

Colorado Springs Part 2

While we were in Colorado Springs we had the pleasure of meeting up with my dad, Grandpa George. We were able to spend the afternoon together and meet up with my Uncle John, Aunt Cindy and cousin Nate for dinner. It was good for my girls to meet their Grandpa, for the first time. After our time together Gracie said randomly a couple of times, "I miss Grandpa George."

If your reading this dad, you left quite an impression!

The Creek

There was a creek running right past our little cabins in Manitou Springs, CO. Everyone enjoyed it, especially once the joy of panning for gold was discovered! Grace, however gave us a great scare... that is to say for 5 seconds my heart lept out of my chest and I was stricken with panic. Thankfully my dear Mr. F responded clearly and quickly to grab my baby out of the creek that she was floating in, face down, after tumbling down the rocks. She was very shaken but Isaac was a great papa and very mindful to not allow her to sink into a deep fear of water, walking her across the creek together one more time helping her stay calm.

Amazing, isn't it? How quickly life can change. I am so thankful that we were all out there watching together, looking out for each other. Imagine what could have been...

I don't have any pictures of time at mom and Ray's RV, but we had the wonderful convenience of walking next door and sharing meals there. Thanks mom!

Wild Frontier, Wild "Now"

Here are a few pic's of the Ghost Frontier Town we visited in Manitou Springs. This was such a great place! All of the kids had a blast exploring all of the exhibits and playing "frontier."

out for a ride together! I would go back to this museum in a heart beat. Everything was so well displayed, I enjoyed reading about the ways of life back then. Standing there reading descriptions of laundry machines and methods of cooking made me so thankful for modern conveniences, although even now I find silly things to grumble about. The latest Rod and Staff newsletter put it well in the article "What Is New?" based on the book of Ecclesiastes.

"...Further, consider human behavior. Has it changed a lot since Adam? Although technology makes life today seem drastically different from just fifty years ago, people's attitudes and characters have really not changed. The housewife who got tired of heating water to do her laundry in 1950 has her counterpart in the housewife who complains about her automatic washer working too slowly."

HA! before I lose you and you and you write off this article as too harsh, let me share that the main point was not to discourage you from daily chores but to encourage a "new perspective of life." That is the life of those who seek God, the unchanging God in whom the one true newness is found- "new birth, all things become new (2 Corinthians 5:17.)"

Soo, whether I lived in the days of the wild frontier or the days of the wild "now," I will choose to be thankful, choose not to grumble and do my best to love the NEW life I have been given in Christ.

Casa Bonita

Casa Bonita is a restaurant Elaine and I used to go to with Grandpa when we were kids. The environment is a blast! Hopefully these pics give you a little glimpse...

If you look closely at what the kids are looking at you will see the cliff diver. Throughout the day they have shows that include someone diving or "falling" off of a cliff 3 stories high.

It was fun to be back and explore with our kids something that we (Elaine and I) enjoyed as kids.

Garden of the Gods

Garden of the Gods was our first stop for sight seeing in Colorado Springs. It is amazing- beautiful red rocks, climbing and hiking, and a lot of heat.

Colorado Trip Highlights

The last two weeks in August we had the amazing opportunity to drive to Colorado. We were able to see family, visit the family farm and make some great memories. We caravanned there and back with the Kuykendalls- needless to say we had a blast!! We are so thankful for the time we were able to spend with family, and I had the great joy of sharing a piece of my childhood memories with my girls. A great big thank you to Mom for making the trip a reality, and thanks to Wanda for hosting all of the many families with such grace!

on the way home we stopped for a day in Yellowstone National Park. Sooo beautiful. I want to go back!

In Colorado Springs we were able to meet up with my Dad, Grandpa George. It was the girls' first time to meet him, and he made quite an impact. Days later Gracie would say randomly in the car, "I miss Grandpa George!"

Casa Bonita- a must for Elaine and I. We went there as kids and loved it! There are a lot of cool things to do and see inside- including another cliff hanger! haha

OF course there was a lot of this on the trip...

and a lot of this in the car... Doodle pads are a must have for long drives.

And last but definitely not least, a WHOLE lot of this. especially on the first day.

We had a blast having a campout with the kuykendalls. I think this was the girls' first experience with making smores. Thanks for the good times!

Uncle BJ was so sweet the help the girls roast there marshmallow to perfection!

A Brief Encounter

What a pleasure it was to see Great Grandma Gonseth... we were on our way out, Grammie and Grandma on their way in, and Grandpa was quickly stopping in for lunch! We look forward to spending more time with her during our visit on the west side but I was glad to have a chance to snap some photos of the girls enjoying time with her.

The_Best_Nest

We have recently moved out of our little red home. I will miss the familiarity and closeness that we shared there, but I will appreciate a little more space. Now we live in a sweet little farm house owned by a local farmer. We are beginning the great adventure of learning about life in the country... mice, dust, and a lot of fun outside.

Our new front porch is currently being used by a barn swallow. It has been fun watching her build the mud nest, complete with long horse hairs dangling down. It's just a good thing we don't use that door very much!

A Great Visit

We had the great pleasure of Grandma and Grandpa Hill coming by for a visit. We had just moved into the farm house so things were a bit crazy, but I don't think anyone minded! We even had an extra visitor... mom almost stepped on a mouse. (outside, but close enough.=)

Watching a three year old wholeheartedly delight herself in a simple pleasure reminds me of how much I love our little family. Esther, as we cleaned our hands after the playground: "in my class upstairs [sunday school] we use hand appetizer."

Yet Again...

Mother's day weekend once again, and the balloons came to town. At one point Isaac counted 32 balloons up in the sky! It is so impressive. I wonder what it is like to be up there in a little basket, above the town so early, how calm and quiet it must be. Nothing but the "KKKCCCHH" of the fire blowing hot air into the balloon so that you don't fall to your demise or hit a tree.

Anyway, we had a beautiful weekend together as a family, chasing balloons, painting the farm house and enjoying the sunshine on our bikes. I hope you were all able to do something special over the weekend. And to all the moms and grandmas and auntie's in our lives, we love you very, very much!

This is Cailey...

You know those folks that walk into your life, become a part if it and then life changes? Suddenly I had a friend that I could truly count on and turn to for anything. I remember being skeptical (brieflly), and then amazed (continually) at Cailey's intentional, sincere care for me and my family. Her entire family loved our girls. In fact, her daughter Kelcey watched our girls so often for free, believing it to be her ministry to us. I hope she knows just how much she blessed us!

Isaac, Brent and Cailey worked together at the Church office. In the two short years we worked together, we walked through an awful lot... several changes at the church including the resigning of 3 pastors, sicknesses in our own families and our extendeds, and my family's miscarriage. It is amazing how close two families can become walking through life and ministry together. Aside from ridiculous amounts of laughter and tears, we spent many a night together at del taco or in our living rooms huddled around Ike's laptop. OH, and how could I forget the monopoly games? Of course Cailey and I dominated, every time! *wink*

How they tolerated us I don't know! I wouldn't even know where to begin with our list of "offences," but let's just say that since they have moved the church office is much lonelier and Ike doesn't have anyone to shoot with his airsoft gun. (ultimately we can thank BJ for that, right?!) Even with all of our "quirks," they never passed judgement on us, strange to think about the unconditional support they offered us.

Well, not long ago we had to say goodbye. But we all know that goodbye is not really the appropriate word. We are linked for life now, like it or not guys!! And thanks to modern technology, we can even see each other when we talk.

Dumler family, know that you are loved and missed. I am so thankful for the chance to know you. I learned so much about friendship and ministry... so, thanks.

The Birthday Girl

On April 3rd our little spitfire turned 3 years old. I am so in love with the little lady Gracie is growing up to be... she has a spirit of adventure and independence wrapped up with a tender and nurturing heart. She is constantly moving, and now also constantly speaking... about anything that crosses her curious mind. The piece of her personality I enjoy so much right now is her ability to bring out a laugh in the midst of any situation... often unintentional. and often during a "training session." Grace is full of contradiction- outgoing and shy, adventurous and afraid, aggressive but also so nurturing. I am so blessed to be a part of bringing up this little lady.

I love that my girls are such good friends. Words don't do justice for the deep feeling of gratefulness I have... and I give all the glory to God. Their friendship was a long time coming. For a loooong time I was a referee and often beside myself, needing encouragement and counsel just to figure out how to be, or at least attempt to be, a good parent. Is everyday perfect? um, no. Do we still have a long way to go? Well, as many days as God gives us on this earth we will be learning what it means to be a family in God's kingdom. But I praise him for the bits of goodness we can see emerging.

As the article came to a close I was moved with conviction in more than one area of my own life. This is our coop, or ark. The ramp that is down leads to the nesting boxes, and all four sides around the nesting boxes come off to let us gather eggs. Ideally I can raise the ramp while the chickens are downstairs to nab the eggs, the only difficulty will be when a hen gets broody... I'll need to move her down to the food... crazy instincts!

We had the pleasure of traveling to the west side of the state mid- February. First we went up to Seattle to attend church with an old friend. Then we headed south to Centralia and visited family. finally, we went even further south to Florence OR to visit with my mom and see her new house.

We had a great trip... relaxing, refreshing, and fun!

This was mom's first time meeting Paisley so it was extra special.

We had great weather while we were in Florence, perfect because we could have fun at the beach!

This was after a bath in Grandma's "special" tub! We tried to turn the jets on but it wasn't full enough. Needless to say the girls preferred to not try again!

A Little of What We've Been Up To...

Last fall Isaac and I began plans for what has now come to fruition... CHICKENS! Not long ago we purchased our first "family pet," although I think chickens are better than a pet because they contribute something very practical to the family. We have enjoyed watching them grow (and die- if you don't know, I'll fill ya in later...=) They are now in quite a goofy stage. A friend at church named it well when she said they almost look like dinosaurs (the shape they take on.)

Anyway, it is a great family project! I am surprised at just how low-maintenance they have been so far, and we all have fun going out to check on them together.

Here they are graduating to a bigger box. The chicks change and grow fast- not long after this we had to tape cardboard to the top rim because Beaker hopped out onto my dryer twice! It looked real classy...

This is Esther's Wyannedotte named rose. She is by far the most docile.

This is Maisie... she is a runt and still the smallest of the pack. I picked her because she was sooo cute. I have to remember that she would be just as cute grilled with a nice tex mex rub or honey glaze...

THIS is Beaker, poor thing looks ridiculous now, but that is why Ike chose him. or her. it was 79 cents because the gender was unknown. Currently he has real feathers on the top of his head now that are tall and look like a mohawk. They bounce when he pecks at things. If only we all could have that kind of "body" in our hair.

There are 7 chickens total. There used to be 8, but we had an incident with Gracie enjoying a chick way to much.

This is a flash back! Pictures that I post will be a bit out of order for a while, but really I think being chronological is overrated...

The last weekend before Paisley joined us the Kuykendalls and my mom and Ray came out to visit. I know that they were hoping to meet Paisley, but she had other plans! At any rate we had a great weekend together.

We visited the Whitman mission on Saturday. It was a beautiful day, and so interesting to read the story of such a courageous and faithful family.

On Christmas eve we started a new tradition of telling the girls about Jesus by candlelight. Yes, we knew the risk of having open flame next to our $3 dead tree... but there was adult supervision... Papa, because Mama is a bit clumsy.

we went to Pioneer Park to try and capture a good family picture for our card. It allowed us to have a good excuse to go out on the first day of snow. Needless to say, we weren't too successful. The girls were cold, I was concerned that Paisley wouldn't stay dry and warm, and then there was the attack squirrel. I think he was trying to protect his nuts, but we (except for Ike,) were all a little scared of him.

We had a good time choosing our Christmas tree... all ten minutes of it! This is the first tree that we looked at in the "natural" section of Klicker's. It was $3. The price pretty much sealed the deal.

Bonus- it was missing branches on one half of it which allowed us to push it up against the wall. Perfect for our little red house!

Two Weeks Old

It's difficult to believe that we have had Paisley in our lives now for two weeks. In some ways it feels like she has always been a part of the family. I know that having her at this newborn stage will pass in the blink of an eye, I am truly enjoying her and I love watching Esther and Grace enjoy her as well.

We took Paisley to her 2 week check up. As a recap, at 2 days old she had lost 7% of her birth weight. At 2 weeks, she had gained it all back and then some. She weighed in at 8 lbs 6oz!

Our household is definitely not back into a routine and I am barely being productive on a daily basis, but we are enjoying being a family of 5. I do look forward to the days of having a good routine again, but for now I will soak up all the moments that I can with my 3 girls.

Esther is soo motherly. She is a huge helper, letting me know every time Paisley makes a noise, cries, moves or grunts! Just tonight as we were driving home, Paisley began to cry and Esther started talking to her saying "what's wrong? are you ok?" and tried to comfort her. Esther also constantly gives her kisses and giggles at the size of Paisley's hands and feet.

We have been so blessed with our new addition, and I can't imagine anything better than to have Esther and Grace as Paisley's big sisters.

Amy waits patiently for Dr. Wujek to arrive to break her water.

After a few hours of not much progress, Dr. Wujek decides to start some pitocin... just to get things going!

Pitocin worked like a charm. Amy labored, and walked around the floor for a few hours. Then got an epidural. And some time and pushing hard through three contractions, then out came Paisley Mae Freeman. Paisley did have the cord wrapped around her neck but Dr. Wujek was able to take it off no problem.

Paisley is a little swollen and bruised up... weighing in at 7lbs 8oz.

I was asked if I wanted to bath her, I couldn't pass it up. It's always a little weird to hold around their necks like that.

All cleaned up, ready to head home. This is a rare catch of her wide eyed and awake.

World Premiere!

Today we checked into St. Mary's Hospital at 6am. Our doctor came in to break our water at 7am. By noon'ish we were on the "kick it into gear" juice (pitocin). And by 3'ish we were in some major labor and Amy got a epidural. By 4:45 we were holding our then nameless child.

She has since been given the name Paisley Mae. Paisley was 7lbs 8oz. 20.5 inches long. She looks a bit like Esther and a bit like Grace but fully unique. She hasn't really cried and ate great!

pretty amazing...I have 3 little girls! What's a Papa to do!

oh and for now she has jet black hair! ...Get that from Grandma Barb maybe!?

Pregnancy Update

We are 39 weeks, and counting! It is amazing how time goes on. We live our lives and in a blink of an eye time has passed us by. This pregnancy was fast, to say the least. It is strange to think that last July we would've been welcoming a new little one. We will just have to wait a little longer to meet that sweet blessing. Now we wait in anticipation to accept this gift God has blessed us with. I can't think of a better way to spend my time here on Earth, being a wife to an amazing man and mama to three little ladies! (well, according to the ultrasound we will add one more girl to the mix!) We appreciate your prayers for a smooth delivery and healthy baby, in addition to wisdom and guidance as we continue to learn what it means to be parents.

I love that in Walla Walla we can have "rainy days." It isn't that it doesn't ever rain, or that it is even rare, but it happens just often enough to make a day different and somehow special. Now we look forward to the snow! Esther is so excited for our first snow day... and I confess, so am I.

We took the girls downtown to trick or treat in the afternoon. Needless to say, it was super crowded! We waited in long lines and walked slowly through huge crowds for a few pieces of candy... what can I say? It is for the experience! It was fun to see other kids dressed up. Esther pointed out every possible "fairy" costume she could spot!

After downtown, we went to the church for the carnival. More crowds! We had a great time being dressed up and seeing our friends.

Our Little Princess turns 4

On September 18 our firstborn turned 4 years old. It is difficult to imagine a life without our funny, sensitive girly girl. She is growing into such a little lady- so smart and imaginative, responsible and caring. There was no way for me to know just how much she would love anything princess and sparkly, dresses and even nail polish. Did you see the clip on earrings? Where did the love of this come from? I just pray that as her parents we can raise her with a love and wisdom of inner beauty and godly character. I love her now more than I could have imagined, and am so grateful for every day we get to share.

To have a little celebration, we had two families over for dinner and fun. From left to right is Esther, Maddie and Abigail. Gracie did not want to get in the picture, but they all have fun together and are in the same class at church on Sundays.

My attempt at making a "castle cake." I did not find the food coloring that I thought I had to make pink frosting, so we went with red and white. Also, you cannot see it, but I had to prop this thing up in the back with several random objects to get it to stay upright. We had fun in the process of making it, and I do think Esther still thought it was totally cool... until we went to Albertsons and saw THEIR castle cake... =)

Summer Travels... The Zoo

Our visit to Portland at the end of August afforded us a chance to visit the Portland Zoo. We had a great time, although it was classic Portland weather (cold and overcast). Esther was most excited about the penguins, and both girls enjoyed meeting the baby elephant.

We splurged and rode the train. A first time for all of us.

For the Love of a Mother...

As most of you may know, my mom has been in a battle against Multiple Myeloma. Recently she underwent an autologous stem cell transplant at OHSU. Our first visit to Portland was at the end of August, before the transplant. We enjoyed visiting with Grandma and Grandpa at the RV and I am glad that we were able to all be together.

Our latest visit was just last week. This picture was taken from the waiting room at OHSU where the girls and I stayed while Isaac and Aunt Elaine went in to visit mom. Because of a suppressed immune system and a concern for germ transmission, children and anyone with cold symptoms could not go onto the unit.

We were able to visit for a bit when mom came out to the double doors- we just spoke over the door jamb! This was my first time seeing her so changed- physically. I know all of that will resolve in time. I also know we serve a God who is bigger than anything we could imagine- and no matter what we walk through he is present and he is unchanged. What has struck me more than anything is realizing how precious our time together is, and how strong this woman truly is.

I cannot imagine the strength and resolve my mom has needed to walk through this. I am touched by her positive attitude through it all. She never lost her hope. In fact, I am willing to bet that her hope is stronger and faith more sure.

Home Sweet Home

As we pulled up to our little red house last night in the dark a wave of comfort washed over us. After spending an entire week away from home, we were all glad to be back. Don't get me wrong, we had an amazing time at the beach and a wonderful time visiting with family and relaxing (I will post on that soon with pictures!) but there is something so pleasant about falling into your own bed at night. The windows were open with a crisp breeze telling us that autumn is right around the corner and our little ones were sleeping safe and snug in their beds right next door. If that wasn't enough, morning came.

First I heard Esther. She was telling Grace a story about a princess with a pink dress and a crown. The next thing I know, she is inviting Grace to join her up in the top bunk where many giggles soon follow. Esther says: "can I poke your eye?" "....no... can I poke your eye?" "....no."

And then more giggles. Life is good.

I just thought you all might find some encouragement from this very moving story. Not only does it offer a perspective on living with hope through loss, it is a great reminder to be following the commands in Deuteronomy 11 that says

"faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today—to love the LORD your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul-" v.13, and "Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." v. 19

For those who are interested, here is the link to the peanut butter play-dough recipe we used. It uses honey, so don't let any babes grab it to eat! The website has some amazing recipes, and I have enjoyed trying quite a few of them (with a good response from those partaking- woo-hoo!)

Also, this is the pattern I am using for my shades. So far they are coming along nicely. The only tricky part is that my bigger window is so wide, I had a hard time finding something to use for the dowels. We shall see how it turns out! I am doing the "classic shade," with room darkening fabric for the backing. My attempt to cut down on the heat that is created in the mornings by the sun streaming in... something I enjoy in the winter, but not so much right now.

I found a better pattern that the one that I used for the living room and kitchen. This one is from Martha Stewart... It is great except that I have the disadvantage of not knowing what I am really doing! What was intentioned to relieve the heat of summer has turned into a summer project with an end goal of... whenever.

I found a great recipe for Peanut butter play-dough that was sooo yummy! The girls had a blast playing with it, and by the end Gracie's lump was half the size of Esther's! Esther continued to play with it for a total of 1 and 1/2 hours... I love this stuff.

It took a little while for the imagination to kick in. At first they just poked it and flattened it, but then Esther created this family.

FIGHT!

When we accepted the notion that we needed to aggressively pursue the truth, we knew it wouldn't be easy. For the past few months it has been a wild ride- how does one stand up for what is right with integrity, follow biblical principles, guard and repair relationships, and protect the home from spiritual attacks? We have had to feel the weight and pain of betrayal, say goodbye to an amazing pastor and family, be ready with appropriate answers to fellow brothers and sisters in the church and encourage them to patiently wait for the answers they are seeking, and wonder how we can ever reach healing without the loss of people or their faith in Christ. Please don't misunderstand me, we are not alone. Praise God for fellow workers in Christ that we are along-side.

Among many of the questions we have wrestled with is this one... how long will this go on? And just when we saw a glimmer of hope for a step of resolution, WHAM! Another challenge. A physical and personal one, seemingly completely unrelated, but oh, so timely. I can only imagine that the evil one is scheming. I cling once again the the scripture posted previously.

Isaac is scheduled to preach this Sunday- our first sunday since we said goodbye to our Worship Pastor, the Sunday that people will be expecting some answers, and the Sunday that there is a good possibility they will get those answers, to a degree, Lord willing.

While working on the new stage and ramp, a large metal wood clamp sprung loose and landed right on Isaac's upper lip and teeth- yeah, ouch. He got a couple stitches, his teeth are stabilized with a temporary wire, and hopefully the pain will decrease soon. It could've been so much worse, and I know he will be fine. But I almost have to laugh at Satan's attempt- "no one would blame you if you didn't preach, you need to take time off, is your spirit broken yet?" While it has been strange for the girls and I to see our amazing, outgoing, talkative and always laughing husband and papa quiet and almost withdrawn, I know his spirit isn't broken. If anything, he has more focused resolution. I know he knows the battle we are in, and his strength is not of this world.

This Sunday will be difficult. It will also be comical- Ike has a new "grill" to sport while preaching that comes complete with swollen lips and a lisp! Pray that the truth and message God has for these people can be spoken clearly and received, and that when the dust finally settles, we can begin healing.

Until that day comes, we fight.

Adventures in Potty Training...

Day 1: No success,

Much laundry,

The only thing dry... the potty chair.

On a positive note, 1 m&m for spawn, many for me!

Day 2: 1 small success, perhaps by chance?

Day 3: 1 Big mess,

1 Frazzled mama, and then.....

A Huge SUCCESS!!! Apparently hearing the tinkle helped her grasp the concept. It seems we turned a corner half way through the day when we moved to the big "tinkling" chair. She even woke up with a dry pull-up after a 2 hour nap.

Now if we can only keep our momentum...

Another Fun Project

The girls and I had a fun time sorting through fabric scraps and choosing colors for our necklaces. We found the great craft here, it was a link from The Long Thread. The blog also has a really cute tutorial to make a bag with braided scraps for the handles. I really haven't read too much of her postings, but I appreciate the great craft ideas!

We met Papa at the park for lunch on Friday. It was a great day, not too hot and not too crowded. It was nice to sit on a blanket in the shade and watch the girls play.

Doing an art project inspired by Eric Carle's book, "The Very Lonely Firefly." .....which I've never read! Looks like another trip to the bookstore is in order. We found the idea here. I love this website. It is chock full of great crafts, sewing projects and ideas. One of my favorites right now. Someday I will post links in my sidebar... but for now I am still working on updating in a timely manner.

Gracie is a riot in her sun glasses!

The dress Esther is wearing was a repurpose project that I did. I will post on it soon. It was fun, and she really likes it! I enjoy making things that they love. There have been times when I get more excited than they do... this time was a hit!

A prego picture for you to see. I know, I know, I am so stylish in my helmet! Keep in mind, this picture is old- it was taken June 20th. I feel twice as big now! (Some of you have seen me since then.) Thanks to some very kind and thoughtful birthday gifts, I am now able to go on a bike ride and be comfortable! This bike is from walmart- a great price and totally snazzy!
